Have you ever felt a magnet push or pull without touching anything? Magnets have an invisible space around them. This space is called a magnetic field.
We can plan a test to see this field. If we sprinkle tiny iron bits around a magnet, they line up. They show us the invisible lines of force.
This force acts at a distance. That means the magnet does not have to touch an object to pull it. The pull gets stronger as they get closer.
✏️ Worked example
Let us plan an investigation. We want to find out if a magnet can pull a steel paperclip through a thick piece of cardboard.
- First, we state our question: Can magnetic force pass through a solid barrier?
- Next, we gather our tools. We need a strong bar magnet, a steel paperclip, and a sheet of thick cardboard.
- Then, we set up the test. We place the paperclip on top of the cardboard sheet.
- We hold the magnet directly under the cardboard, right beneath the paperclip.
- Now, we move the magnet sideways and watch the paperclip closely.
- We record our results. The paperclip moves with the magnet! This proves the magnetic field acts through the cardboard.
