Welcome, scientist! Today we will read about states of matter and practice smart reading skills.
Matter is anything that takes up space. Before reading a text, look at the main heading. Ask yourself a question like: What are the three states of matter?
Solids keep their shape, like a wooden block. We can predict that liquids change shape because they flow into cups.
Gases float around and fill any space. During reading, check your predictions using diagrams and pictures in the text.
After reading, ask new questions to check your learning. Did the text confirm how water turns into steam?

Read this caption: 'Water turns to ice when cold.' Predict what state ice is, then confirm it.
Step 1: Look at text features. The heading says 'Frozen Water'.
Step 2: Ask a question before reading: What happens when water freezes?
Step 3: Make a prediction. Ice is hard, so it is probably a solid.
Step 4: Read the text to confirm. The text says ice keeps its shape, so my prediction is correct!
