Our solar system is a busy place where objects move in paths called orbits. The Sun sits at the very center, holding everything together with its gravity.
We can model how the Sun, Earth, and Moon move together. The Earth travels in a giant circle around the Sun, while the tiny Moon circles around the Earth.
There are eight planets in our solar system. They always stay in the same order, starting from the Sun and moving outward into space.
✏️ Worked example
Explain how to identify the correct order of the first four planets starting from the Sun, and compare Earth's orbit to the Moon's orbit.
- Find the Sun first, because it is the center of our solar system.
- Count outward from the Sun to name the planets in order: Mercury is first, Venus is second, Earth is third, and Mars is fourth.
- Look at how Earth moves. It orbits around the Sun in a very large path.
- Look at how the Moon moves. It orbits in a much smaller path around the Earth.
- Explain the difference: The Earth circles the Sun, but the Moon circles the Earth.
