When we analyze a text structure, we look at how the author organizes the details. Organizing by time helps the author explain how older fossils got buried deep down, while newer fossils rest on top.
Read this short paragraph. Then, analyze how the text structure helps us understand the author's purpose. "First, a fish died and sank to the muddy lake bottom. Next, sand covered the fish over many years. Finally, the mud turned to hard rock, leaving a perfect fossil."
