Earth's moon & phases

Grade 5 · Science · Free lesson

Welcome, scientist! Let's explore how the Sun, Earth, and Moon move together in space.

Space objects move in paths called orbits. An orbit is a curved path around another object. We can construct models to show how they move.

planet

The Earth orbits the Sun. One full loop takes one whole year. The Sun stays in the center of our solar system.

SunEarth

The Moon orbits the Earth. While Earth travels around the Sun, the Moon circles around Earth. One Moon orbit takes about one month.

EarthMoon

We can explain these movements using a model. The Sun is at the center. Earth circles the Sun. The Moon circles Earth at the same time.

✏️ Worked example

Explain how to build a 3D model of the Sun, Earth, and Moon system.

  1. Step 1: Choose a large yellow ball for the Sun. Place it in the center.
  2. Step 2: Choose a medium blue ball for Earth. Place it on a ring path around the Sun.
  3. Step 3: Choose a small white ball for the Moon. Place it on a small ring around Earth.
  4. Step 4: Move Earth along its big ring around the Sun.
  5. Step 5: Move the Moon along its small ring around Earth as Earth moves.
