Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Every time you run, a light bulb shines, or a car drives down the street, energy is hard at work!

Energy comes in different forms! One major form is Kinetic Energy, which is the energy of motion. Anything that is moving—like a rolling ball or a blowing wind—has kinetic energy.
Another form is Potential Energy, which is stored energy waiting to be released. Think of a stretched rubber band or a roller coaster sitting at the very top of a hill, ready to zoom down!
Let's look at a simple example of energy changing forms: A basketball player bouncing a ball. How does energy change from stored (potential) to moving (kinetic) and back?
- 1. The player holds the basketball high up in the air. Because of its height, the ball has stored Potential Energy.
- 2. The player lets go! As the ball falls toward the floor, its potential energy turns into Kinetic Energy because it is moving.
- 3. The ball hits the floor and squishes slightly, briefly storing energy again.
- 4. The ball bounces back up, turning that energy back into Kinetic Energy as it rises.
