Heat transfer (conduction, convection, radiation)

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your science guide. Today, we will explore how heat travels to warm up our world!

Heat is always on the move. It always travels from warmer places to cooler places. There are three main ways heat can move: conduction, convection, and radiation.

Conduction is heat transfer through direct touch. When you touch a warm spoon, heat flows straight from the spoon to your hand. The tiny particles in the spoon bump into the particles in your hand to pass the energy along.

Convection happens in liquids and gases, like water or air. Warm fluids rise because they are lighter and less dense. Cold fluids sink because they are heavier and denser. This creates a circular pattern called a convection current.

Radiation is heat traveling through empty space as waves. It does not need any particles to touch or move. This is how the Sun warms Earth from millions of miles away, and how you feel heat from a campfire.

✏️ Worked example

Explain how heat transfers in a pot of boiling soup. Point out conduction, convection, and radiation in this single example.

  1. First, analyze the stove burner. The hot burner sends out heat waves through the air. This is radiation warming the bottom of the pot.
  2. Next, look at where the pot touches the burner. The heat moves directly from the hot metal burner into the metal pot. This direct touch is conduction.
  3. Then, look inside the pot at the soup. The soup at the bottom gets hot first. It becomes lighter and rises to the top.
  4. Finally, the cooler soup at the top sinks down to take its place. This creates a circular moving pattern, which is convection.
