Did you know magnets can push or pull things without even touching them? This happens because of an invisible area around them. We call this area a magnetic field.
The magnetic field is strongest at the ends of a magnet. We call these ends the north and south poles. Watch how the invisible force lines curve from one pole to the other!
We can plan a cool test to see this invisible field. If you sprinkle tiny iron bits around a magnet, they line up. They show us the exact shape of the magnetic field!
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you have a paperclip on a table. You hold a magnet above it, but nothing happens. How can you use a scientific test to find the edge of the magnetic field?
- First, we make a plan to test the magnetic force at different distances.
- Next, we place the paperclip at the zero mark on a ruler.
- Then, we start with the magnet far away at the other end of the ruler.
- Slowly, we slide the magnet closer to the paperclip, one centimeter at a time.
- We watch closely and record the exact distance where the paperclip suddenly jumps to the magnet.
- Finally, we repeat this three times to make sure our data is correct. The jump distance shows us where the magnetic field becomes strong enough to pull!
