Hi there! I am Studyfin, your science guide. Today, we will ask great questions to learn how plants make their own food!

Plants do not eat food like we do. Inside their leaves is a green pigment called chlorophyll, which captures energy from sunlight. The plant uses that energy to combine water taken in by the roots with carbon dioxide taken in from the air. This makes a sugar called glucose, which stores the energy, and releases oxygen into the air. This process is called photosynthesis.

To study science, we must ask good questions. A great inquiry question helps us plan an experiment. We can ask: How does the amount of sunlight affect how fast a plant grows?

Do plants need direct sunlight?

We can also clarify our questions to make them better. Clarifying means making a vague question specific. For example, changing 'Do plants like water?' to 'How many milliliters of water does a fern need daily?'

Imagine you want to study how plants use air. Walk through the steps to generate and clarify a scientific question about plants and carbon dioxide.

  1. Step 1: Start with a broad topic. We know plants take in carbon dioxide from the air to make food.
  2. Step 2: Generate a basic question. We might ask: 'Do plants grow better with more carbon dioxide?'
  3. Step 3: Analyze the question. This question is a bit too simple because 'better' is hard to measure.
  4. Step 4: Clarify the question. We can change 'better' to 'plant height in centimeters.'
  5. Step 5: Write the final inquiry question: 'How does the level of carbon dioxide affect the height of a bean plant after two weeks?'
