Renewable & nonrenewable resources

Grade 5 · Science · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let's explore the amazing resources our Earth gives us!

Earth gives us natural resources to help us live. Some can be replaced quickly, but others take millions of years to form.

book

Renewable resources can be replaced easily by nature. The sun shines and the wind blows every single day, so they never run out!

Nonrenewable resources cannot be replaced quickly. Coal, oil, and natural gas are trapped underground. Once we use them up, they are gone for good.

✏️ Worked example

We want to write a letter to the school principal. We will ask them to put solar panels on our school roof. Let's plan our writing by choosing the right genre, purpose, and audience.

  1. First, we identify our audience. The audience is the principal, because they make the big decisions for our school.
  2. Next, we choose our purpose. Our goal is to convince the principal to use clean solar energy. This means our purpose is to persuade.
  3. Then, we pick the best genre. A persuasive letter is the perfect genre to share our ideas respectfully and clearly.
  4. Finally, we plan our topic. We will explain how solar panels use sunlight, which is a great renewable resource, to make clean power.
