Every day, you use forces to move things. A force is simply a push or a pull. When you push a swing, you make it go forward. When you pull a wagon, you make it roll behind you.

A ramp, or inclined plane, is a simple machine that makes moving things easier. Instead of lifting a heavy box straight up, you can push it up a ramp. You use less force over a longer distance to change its position.

Let us plan an investigation to see how different amounts of force change how fast a toy wagon moves. How can we test this fairly?

  1. First, we choose one toy wagon to keep the test fair. We will also use the same flat floor for each test.
  2. Next, we decide on our changes. We will use a gentle pull for the first test, and a strong pull for the second test.
  3. Then, we measure how far the wagon travels in three seconds for both tests using a tape measure.
  4. We compare the results. The strong pull makes the wagon change position much faster than the gentle pull.
  5. Finally, we explain that a larger force causes a bigger change in an object's motion.
