We can plan a simple test to see how forces change an object's position. Imagine pushing a heavy ball on flat grass versus a smooth sidewalk. The same push moves the ball much farther on the smooth sidewalk because there is less friction to slow it down.
A ramp, or inclined plane, is a simple machine that makes moving things easier. Instead of lifting a heavy box straight up, you can push it up a ramp. You use less force over a longer distance to change its position.
Let us plan an investigation to see how different amounts of force change how fast a toy wagon moves. How can we test this fairly?
- First, we choose one toy wagon to keep the test fair. We will also use the same flat floor for each test.
- Next, we decide on our changes. We will use a gentle pull for the first test, and a strong pull for the second test.
- Then, we measure how far the wagon travels in three seconds for both tests using a tape measure.
- We compare the results. The strong pull makes the wagon change position much faster than the gentle pull.
- Finally, we explain that a larger force causes a bigger change in an object's motion.
