Our solar system is a neighborhood in space. At the center is the Sun, a huge star that gives us light and heat.
Eight planets travel around the Sun in curved paths called orbits. Gravity keeps the planets moving in their orbits around the Sun.
We group the planets into two main types. The four rocky planets are close to the Sun, while four gas giants lie farther away.
✏️ Worked example
Explain how to classify an unknown object in space as either an inner planet or an outer planet.
- Check where the object is located compared to the asteroid belt.
- Look at its surface: inner planets are made of solid rock, but outer planets are mostly made of gas.
- Check its size: outer planets are much larger than inner planets.
- Conclusion: If it is small, rocky, and close to the Sun, it is an inner planet!
