Sound and light are both forms of energy that travel in waves. However, they move in very different ways and at different speeds.
Sound waves need a material to travel through, like air, water, or wood. When an object vibrates, it bumps into nearby air particles, sending a wave of sound to your ears.
Light waves do not need any material to travel. They can go through the empty space of universe, and they move much faster than sound!
✏️ Worked example
Let us think about a thunderstorm. Why do you always see the bright flash of lightning before you hear the loud boom of thunder?
Identify the two types of energy at work: lightning is light energy, and thunder is sound energy.
Compare how fast these two energies can travel through the air.
Recall that light travels at an amazing speed of 186,000 miles per second.
Recall that sound is much slower, traveling at only about 0.2 miles per second.
Explain the final result: since light travels faster, its wave reaches your eyes instantly, while the sound wave takes longer to reach your ears.
