Everything around us is made of matter. Matter can exist in three main states: solids, liquids, and gases. Each state has its own special properties.
In a solid, the tiny parts are packed very close together. They can only wiggle in place. This gives a solid a fixed shape, like a toy block.
In a liquid, the parts have a little more room. They can slide and roll past each other. This lets a liquid flow and take the shape of its container.
In a gas, the parts are spread far apart. They move very fast in all directions. A gas will expand to fill up any space it is given.
Let us connect what we know to a real book! Imagine reading a story about a cold winter day. The characters skate on a frozen lake, drink hot cocoa, and see steam rise from the mug. How can we connect our own lives to these three states of matter?
- First, find the solid in the story. The ice on the lake is solid water. I can connect this to when I use ice cubes to cool down my water at home.
- Next, find the liquid. The hot cocoa is a liquid. This connects to my memory of drinking warm milk on a rainy day.
- Then, find the gas. The steam rising from the mug is water vapor, which is a gas. I can connect this to seeing steam rise when my parents boil pasta.
