Welcome! Today we will explore space to see how stars, nebulae, and galaxies form our universe.
Astronomy is the study of outer space. Space is filled with huge glowing objects like stars and vast gas clouds called nebulae.
A nebula is a giant cloud of dust and gas in space. New stars are born deep inside these colorful clouds.
A galaxy is a massive group of billions of stars, dust, and gas held together by gravity. Our home galaxy is the Milky Way.
In TEKS 7.9A, we also study objects in our solar system. Moons orbit planets, while planets orbit the Sun.
✏️ Worked example
Compare a nebula, a star, and a galaxy by arranging them from smallest to largest size.
- Step 1: Identify the smallest single object. A star is one single glowing ball of gas.
- Step 2: Identify the middle object. A nebula is a huge cloud of dust that creates many stars.
- Step 3: Identify the largest object. A galaxy contains billions of stars and many nebulae together.
- Step 4: Write the final order from smallest to largest: Star, Nebula, Galaxy.
