Welcome! Today we will learn how the Earth, Moon, and planets move around the Sun.
In space, objects move in repeating paths called orbits. The Sun sits at the center while Earth orbits the Sun, and the Moon orbits Earth.
Let's look at the Sun, Earth, and Moon system. The Earth revolves around the Sun once each year, and the Moon circles Earth every month.
Eight planets orbit the Sun in a set order. From closest to farthest, they are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, and Neptune.
✏️ Worked example
How can we make a model showing Earth's orbit around the Sun and find Earth's place among the planets?
- Place the Sun in the center of your drawing.
- Draw Earth in a large circle around the Sun to model its orbit.
- Add the Moon in a smaller circle around Earth.
- Count the planets from closest to farthest from the Sun: Mercury is 1st, Venus is 2nd, and Earth is 3rd.
