An ecosystem is a community of living things and their home. Energy flows through this home in a food chain. To understand these connections, we must ask good questions.
Every food chain starts with the sun. Green plants use sunlight to make their own food. We can ask a 'how' question: How does energy move from the sun to a plant?
Next, animals eat the plants to get energy. We can ask a 'what if' question to investigate: What would happen to the rabbits if all the grass died?
Let's practice modeling the skill of inquiry! Imagine you see a pond with algae, small fish, and big herons (birds). How do we generate good questions to study this ecosystem?
- First, observe the living parts. We see green algae, small fish, and large birds.
- Second, think about how they connect. The fish likely eat the algae, and the birds eat the fish.
- Third, write a basic question about the food chain. For example: 'What do the fish eat?'
- Fourth, upgrade to an inquiry question that we can test or research. For example: 'How does the amount of algae affect the number of fish in the pond?'
