Energy

Grade 6 · Science · Free lesson

Hey there! Today we are going to explore the super-cool world of energy—the invisible force that makes everything in the universe move, shake, and shine!

Energy is simply the ability to do work or cause change. Whenever something moves, heats up, makes a sound, or lights up, energy is hard at work!

Energy can be stored up for later. We call this potential energy! Think of a roller coaster car sitting at the very top of a tall hill, just waiting to zoom down.

Stored Potential Energy!

Once that roller coaster starts moving, that stored energy turns into kinetic energy, which is the energy of motion. The faster something moves, the more kinetic energy it has!

Kinetic Energy in Motion!
✏️ Worked example

Classify the energy in these two situations: 1) A stretched rubber band resting in your fingers, and 2) The same rubber band flying through the air after you let it go.

  1. Identify if the object is moving or waiting to move in the first situation.
  2. Since the stretched rubber band is still and waiting, it has stored energy. This is Potential Energy.
  3. Identify if the object is moving in the second situation.
  4. Since the released rubber band is flying through the air, it is in motion. This is Kinetic Energy!
