Welcome! Today we will explore how heat travels from warm places to cool places in three amazing ways.

Heat is a form of energy that always moves from warmer objects to cooler ones. This movement is called heat transfer, and it happens all around us every single day.

Conduction is heat transfer through direct touch. When you touch a warm spoon, heat moves directly from the spoon to your hand because the tiny particles are bumping into each other.

Convection is heat transfer through liquids or gases. Warm fluids rise because they are less dense, and cool fluids sink, creating a circular pattern called a convection current.

Radiation is heat transfer through electromagnetic waves. It does not need any matter to travel, which is how the sun's warmth can travel through empty space to reach Earth.

✏️ Worked example

Identify which type of heat transfer is happening when you warm your hands near a campfire without touching the flames or the hot air rising above it.

  1. Analyze the situation: You are standing beside the campfire, not directly above it.
  2. Rule out conduction: You are not touching the fire, so it cannot be conduction.
  3. Rule out convection: The hot air from the fire rises straight up, but you are standing to the side.
  4. Identify the remaining method: The heat is traveling sideways to your hands through invisible infrared waves.
  5. Conclude: Since the heat travels in waves through the air to your hands, this is radiation.
