Human body

Grade 6 · Science · Free lesson

Welcome! Today we are going on a journey inside ourselves to discover how our incredible bodies work.

The human body is like a highly organized, busy city. Millions of tiny parts work together every single second to help you run, think, breathe, and grow!

Your bones make up the skeletal system, which acts as the sturdy frame of your body. Without bones, you would be as floppy as a wet noodle! Your skeleton also protects important organs like your brain and heart.

Bones Joint (Elbow)

To move those bones, you need muscles! Muscles are stretchy bands of tissue that pull on your bones to make you move. When you bend your arm, your bicep muscle contracts, or squeezes tight, to pull your forearm up.

Muscles Pull to Create Movement
✏️ Worked example

How do the skeletal system and muscular system work together to help you kick a soccer ball?

  1. 1. Your brain decides to kick the ball and sends an electrical signal down your nerves.
  2. 2. The signal reaches the leg muscles, telling them it is time to act.
  3. 3. Your thigh muscles contract (shorten and tighten), pulling on the leg bones.
  4. 4. The bones swing forward at the knee joint, acting like a lever to kick the ball!
