Hey there! I'm Studyfin, your science tutor. Today we are going to explore the invisible, pulling power of magnets!

Have you ever felt two magnets push or pull each other before they even touch? This happens because of a force that acts at a distance. Magnets do not need to make direct contact to cause a push or a pull.

Every magnet is surrounded by an invisible region of magnetic force called a magnetic field. We map this field with magnetic field lines, which outside the magnet always point out of the north pole and curve around into the south pole. Sprinkling iron filings around a bar magnet reveals these lines, and where they crowd closest together, near the poles, the field is strongest.

Magnetic forces follow clear patterns. Opposite poles, like North and South, attract and pull toward each other. Like poles, such as two North poles, repel and push away from each other.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you want to investigate how the distance between two magnets affects the strength of their magnetic force. Explain how you would plan and conduct this investigation step-by-step.

  1. Gather your materials: two bar magnets, a wooden ruler, and a small metal paperclip.
  2. Place the ruler flat on a table. Put one magnet at the 0-centimeter mark and tape it down.
  3. Place the paperclip at the 10-centimeter mark on the ruler.
  4. Slowly slide the second magnet closer to the paperclip, one centimeter at a time.
  5. Observe and record the exact distance on the ruler where the paperclip first jumps to the magnet.
  6. Repeat the test three times to find a pattern and make sure your data is accurate.
