Hello! I am Studyfin, your science tutor. Today, we will explore how plants use sunlight to make their own food!
Plants do not eat food like we do. Instead, they make their own food using a special process called photosynthesis. This process happens inside the green leaves of the plant.
To make food, plants need three main ingredients. They take in water from the soil, carbon dioxide gas from the air, and bright light from the sun.
Inside the leaf, a green helper called chlorophyll traps the sunlight. The plant uses this energy to turn water and carbon dioxide into a sweet sugar called glucose.
The plant keeps the sugar to grow big and strong. During this process, the plant also makes oxygen gas and releases it into the air for us to breathe!
Let us trace how water travels to help a flower make food. Explain the path water takes from the soil to the leaf where photosynthesis happens.
- First, rain or watering cans wet the soil around the plant's roots.
- Next, the roots drink up the water from the wet soil.
- Then, the water travels all the way up the stem like water going up a straw.
- Finally, the water enters the flat green leaf. Here, it meets sunlight and carbon dioxide to make sugar!
