Did you know the ground beneath your feet is actually moving? Earth's outer shell is cracked into giant, puzzle-like pieces called tectonic plates.
These giant plates float on a hot, semi-liquid layer of rock. As they float, they slowly slide past, push into, or pull away from each other.
When plates pull apart, they create a gap. Hot melted rock rises up to fill the gap, cools down, and forms brand new crust.
We can build our writing to explain this process clearly. To do this, we structure our drafts with a clear introduction, body, and conclusion.
Let's practice our TEKS 7.10(B) writing skills! Write a structured draft explaining what happens when two tectonic plates crash into each other.
- Step 1: Write a focused introduction sentence. State your main idea clearly. Example: 'When two giant tectonic plates crash into each other, they create amazing landforms.'
- Step 2: Add body sentences to explain the process step-by-step. Use transition words like 'first' and 'next'. Example: 'First, the plates push together with huge force. Next, the rock crumples upward to form giant mountain ranges.'
- Step 3: Write a strong conclusion sentence to wrap up your draft. Example: 'In conclusion, these slow crashes shape the beautiful mountains we see on Earth today.'
- Step 4: Review your draft to make sure it is focused, structured, and flows smoothly from start to finish.
