Hey there! I am Studyfin, your science guide. Today, we will explore how electricity and magnetism work together like best friends!

Electricity and magnetism are closely linked. When electricity flows through a wire, it creates an invisible magnetic field around it. This is the big secret behind electromagnets!

We can build a simple electromagnet by wrapping a wire around an iron nail. When we connect the wire to a battery, electricity flows. The nail instantly turns into a temporary magnet!

BATTERY

Just like a regular magnet, an electromagnet has a north pole and a south pole. The cool part is we can turn this magnet on and off simply by flipping a switch!

Flip the switch to flow current!

We can also use magnets to make electricity! Moving a magnet quickly through a coil of wire pushes the electric charges. This clever trick is how power plants light up our homes.

✏️ Worked example

Imagine you want to make a temporary electromagnet stronger to pick up more steel paperclips. You have a battery, a long wire, and an iron nail. Explain the steps to increase the magnetic strength of your setup.

  1. First, find a battery with a higher voltage or add a second battery to increase the electrical current.
  2. Next, wrap the wire around the iron nail many more times. More loops of wire create a stronger magnetic field.
  3. Then, ensure the wire coils are wrapped tightly together around the iron core.
  4. Finally, connect the ends of the wire to the battery. Test your new electromagnet to see if it picks up more paperclips!
