Have you ever wondered how plants grow? They use a process called photosynthesis to make their own food. During this process, plants take in water and carbon dioxide, then use sunlight to turn them into sugar and oxygen.

In a chemical reaction, no matter is created or destroyed. This is the Law of Conservation of Mass. Every single atom that goes into a plant's chemical reaction must come out on the other side.

Let us look at the chemical equation for photosynthesis. Carbon dioxide and water rearrange their atoms using light energy. They turn into glucose sugar and oxygen gas, but the total number of atoms stays exactly the same.

✏️ Worked example

Let us prove that mass is conserved in photosynthesis. We start with 6 molecules of Carbon Dioxide (6 CO2) and 6 molecules of Water (6 H2O). Let's count and compare the atoms before and after the reaction to see if they match.

  1. First, count the Carbon (C) atoms. On the starting side, 6 CO2 molecules have exactly 6 Carbon atoms. On the ending side, 1 glucose molecule (C6H12O6) also has exactly 6 Carbon atoms.
  2. Next, count the Hydrogen (H) atoms. On the starting side, 6 H2O molecules have 12 Hydrogen atoms (6 times 2). On the ending side, 1 glucose molecule has exactly 12 Hydrogen atoms.
  3. Finally, count the Oxygen (O) atoms. On the starting side, we have 12 from carbon dioxide (6 times 2) plus 6 from water, making 18 Oxygen atoms.
  4. Count the ending Oxygen atoms. We have 6 in the glucose molecule plus 12 in the oxygen gas (6 times 2), which also equals 18 Oxygen atoms.
  5. Compare the totals. Since we started with 6 Carbon, 12 Hydrogen, and 18 Oxygen atoms, and ended with the exact same numbers, we have proven that mass is conserved!
