Biodiversity is the variety of all living things in an area. Rainforests have high biodiversity because they are warm, wet, and full of different plants and animals.
When we research biodiversity, we start with a big major question. To answer it, we must ask smaller secondary questions that guide our search for clues.
Sometimes, the answers to our secondary questions show us that our major question is too broad. We then refine, or narrow down, our main question to make it better.
Imagine you start with this major research question: 'How does human activity affect rainforest biodiversity?' Walk through the steps of using secondary questions to refine this big question.
- 1. Identify the major question: 'How does human activity affect rainforest biodiversity?' This is very big because 'human activity' can mean many things.
- 2. Ask secondary questions to gather specific facts. For example: 'Which specific human activity is most common in the Amazon?' and 'Which group of animals is losing their habitat first?'
- 3. Analyze the answers: You find that road building is the main activity, and it specifically hurts tree-dwelling mammals like sloths.
- 4. Refine the major question using these new facts. Change the broad question into a focused one: 'How does road building in the Amazon affect the biodiversity of tree-dwelling mammals?'
