Engineers use a special process to solve real-world problems. They start by defining a problem, planning a creative solution, and building a simple model called a prototype.

Once engineers build a prototype, they must test it to see how well it works. This testing step is key because it helps us find flaws and see what we can improve.

Imagine we need to design a paper prototype of a parachute that drops a toy safely. How can we plan, conduct, and improve our design using scientific practices?

  1. Define the goal: The toy must land slowly and safely without tipping over.
  2. Plan the first design: We choose thin tissue paper for the canopy and lightweight string to hold the toy.
  3. Conduct the first test: Drop the parachute from a height of two meters and measure the drop time with a stopwatch.
  4. Analyze the data: We notice the parachute spins and drops too quickly because the canopy is too small.
  5. Iterate and improve: We increase the size of the tissue paper canopy to catch more air, then test it again to compare results.
