Heat is the movement of thermal energy from a warmer object to a cooler one. This energy always flows in one direction until both objects reach the same temperature.

Conduction is heat transfer through direct contact. When two objects touch, fast-moving particles in the hot object bump into slower particles in the cool object, passing energy along.

Convection is heat transfer through fluids, which includes liquids and gases. Warm fluid rises because it is less dense, while cooler, denser fluid sinks, creating a circular flow called a convection current.

Radiation is heat transfer through electromagnetic waves. It does not need matter to travel, which is how energy from the Sun can travel through the empty vacuum of space to warm the Earth.

Imagine you are boiling a pot of soup on a stove. Identify and explain how conduction, convection, and radiation are all happening at the same time in this single scenario.

  1. Analyze the heat source first. The hot stove burner transfers heat directly to the metal pot. Since they are touching, this is conduction.
  2. Look at the liquid inside the pot. The soup at the bottom gets hot, becomes less dense, and rises. The cooler soup at the top sinks down. This movement creates a convection current.
  3. Hold your hands near the side of the pot without touching it. You can feel the heat radiating outward through the air. This heat travels as electromagnetic waves, which represents radiation.
