Living things in a population are not all exactly the same. They have inherited variations, which are differences in traits passed down from parents, like having different colors or sizes.

Natural selection happens when some traits help individuals survive and reproduce better than others. Over many generations, the helpful traits become more common, changing the whole population instead of just one single animal.

Over a very long time, as populations separate into different environments, they adapt in different ways. This can lead to speciation, which is the creation of a brand new species that can no longer mate with the original group.

✏️ Worked example

An island has a population of birds with different beak sizes. At first, there are both small-beaked and large-beaked birds. After a long drought, only large, tough seeds are left to eat. Walk through how natural selection will analyze and evaluate the changes in this population.

  1. Identify the inherited variation in the bird population: some birds have small beaks, while others have large beaks.
  2. Analyze the environmental change: the drought leaves only large, tough seeds, making small seeds unavailable.
  3. Evaluate survival rates: birds with large beaks can crack the tough seeds easily and survive, while birds with small beaks cannot find food and reproduce less.
  4. Track the population change: over generations, large-beaked birds pass on their helpful genes, so the average beak size of the population increases.
  5. Conclude that natural selection changed the whole population's traits over time, not the beak size of an individual bird during its lifetime.
