Everything in the universe—from the screen you are reading this on, to the air you breathe, to your own body—is made up of tiny building blocks called elements. The Periodic Table is a master map that organizes all of these elements.
Each element has its own special home on the table, represented by a one- or two-letter symbol. For example, 'H' stands for Hydrogen, the lightest and most common element in the entire universe!
The table is organized into rows called 'periods' and columns called 'groups'. Elements in the same group (column) behave like family members—they share very similar traits and react to other chemicals in similar ways!
Find the element Helium (He) on the periodic table. If Helium has an atomic number of 2, what does this tell us about its structure?
- Locate the symbol 'He' at the top right corner of the periodic table.
- Look at the atomic number, which is 2.
- The atomic number tells us the number of protons in the nucleus of an atom.
- Therefore, a single atom of Helium contains exactly 2 protons!
