Earth's outer shell is cracked into giant puzzle pieces called tectonic plates. These plates float slowly on a hot, semi-liquid layer of rock underneath them.

At divergent boundaries, plates pull apart from each other. This movement creates a gap where magma rises to form new crust, which causes ocean basin formation.

At convergent boundaries, plates collide. This crushing force builds massive mountain ranges, triggers volcanic eruptions, and creates powerful earthquakes.

Some volcanoes form away from plate edges. These are called hot spots, where a super-heated plume of magma melts through the plate above, like a blowtorch.

Explain how a convergent boundary can cause both earthquakes and mountain building.

  1. Identify the action: At a convergent boundary, two massive tectonic plates are slowly moving toward each other.
  2. Analyze the collision: As the plates meet, their edges crush, fold, and push upward under intense pressure.
  3. Explain mountain building: The folded rock layers rise higher and higher over millions of years to build mountain ranges.
  4. Explain earthquakes: The plates sometimes get stuck due to friction. When they suddenly slip and release that stored energy, the ground shakes, causing an earthquake.
