To study biodiversity, scientists start with a big research question. If our main question is too broad, we use secondary questions to help us narrow it down and make it better.
Let us model this skill. If we ask 'How do humans affect forests?', that is too huge. We ask secondary questions like 'What does logging do to birds?' to refine our main focus.
A student wants to study the biodiversity of a local pond. Their starting question is: 'How healthy is the pond?' Use secondary questions to refine this into a better scientific research question.
- Identify the weakness of the starting question: 'How healthy is the pond?' is too broad and hard to measure.
- Brainstorm secondary questions to break down 'health'. For example: 'What is the water pH?' or 'How many different frog species live there?'
- Look at the answers or data we can collect. We find we have tools to count frog species but not to test complex chemicals.
- Refine the major question using this focus: 'How does the water runoff from the local road affect the population of frog species in the pond?'
