Ecology is the study of how living organisms interact with each other and their non-living surroundings. Think of it as looking at nature's giant, interconnected puzzle where every piece matters.
In an ecosystem, we group everything into two main categories: biotic factors (living things like plants and animals) and abiotic factors (non-living things like sunlight, water, and soil).
Energy flows through an ecosystem starting from the Sun. Producers (like plants) capture this light energy, which is then passed to Consumers (like animals) when they eat the plants or other animals.
Classify the following parts of a forest pond ecosystem into Biotic or Abiotic factors: Water, Frogs, Water Lilies, Rocks, and Fish.
- 1. Remember that 'Biotic' means living or once-living, and 'Abiotic' means non-living.
- 2. Look at Water and Rocks: these are non-living physical components, so they are Abiotic.
- 3. Look at Frogs and Fish: these are living animals, so they are Biotic.
- 4. Look at Water Lilies: even though they don't move around, they are living plants, so they are Biotic.
- 5. Group them clearly: Biotic = {Frogs, Water Lilies, Fish}; Abiotic = {Water, Rocks}.
