In covalent bonding, atoms share electrons. Imagine two friends sharing a pair of warm mittens in the cold—by holding hands, both stay cozy and bonded together!

Determine what kind of bond forms between a Sodium (Na) atom and a Chlorine (Cl) atom to make table salt.

  2. Look at electron needs: Sodium wants to lose 1 outer electron, while Chlorine eagerly wants to gain 1 electron.
  3. Recognize the action: Sodium transfers its electron entirely to Chlorine.
  4. Observe the result: Sodium becomes a positive ion (Na+), and Chlorine becomes a negative ion (Cl-).
  5. Conclusion: Because of the opposite charges attracting, they form an Ionic Bond!
