Energy is defined as the ability to do work or cause change. Every time something moves, heats up, makes a sound, or flashes with light, energy is being used!
There are two main categories of energy: Potential Energy (stored energy waiting to be released) and Kinetic Energy (the energy of motion). Think of a rollercoaster paused at the very top of a hill—that is maximum potential energy!
Energy can never be created or destroyed; it can only change from one form to another. This is called the Law of Conservation of Energy. For example, a lightbulb converts electrical energy into light and thermal (heat) energy.
A skater stands at the very top of a half-pipe ramp, completely still. As they drop into the ramp and speed towards the bottom, describe how their energy changes.
- Identify the starting state: At the top of the ramp, the skater is high up and motionless, meaning they have maximum Potential Energy and zero Kinetic Energy.
- Identify the transition: As the skater drops down, gravity pulls them downward, causing them to gain speed (velocity).
