When engineers design a new product, they cannot have everything. They must balance different goals, like making a phone battery last longer versus keeping the phone thin and light.

This balancing act is called a trade-off. To get more of one good feature, you often have to give up some of another feature.

Optimization is the process of finding the absolute best solution within these limits. We use data and testing to get the perfect balance for our specific user's needs.

Imagine you are designing a solar-powered backpack for students. You must choose between a cheap, heavy battery or a light, expensive battery. How do you analyze this case to make the best choice?

  1. Identify the core conflict: The student needs a light backpack, but students also have a very limited budget.
  2. Compare the options: A heavy battery saves money but causes back pain. An expensive battery is comfortable but too costly for most teens.
  3. Evaluate the user's main priority: If students cannot afford the backpack, they will not buy it at all. However, if it is too heavy, they will not use it.
  4. Find the optimal compromise: Select a medium-weight battery with moderate cost. This keeps the price reasonable while preventing back strain.
  5. Justify the decision: You choose the mid-range battery because it balances cost and comfort, giving students a product that is both useful and affordable.
