Welcome! I'm Studyfin, and today we're going to explore how pushes and pulls make the world move around us.
A force is simply a push or a pull acting on an object. Whenever you kick a soccer ball, pull open a heavy door, or even sit on a chair, forces are at work!

Every force has both a size (strength) and a specific direction. We represent forces using arrows: the direction of the arrow shows where the force is pushing, and a bigger arrow means a stronger force!
When multiple forces act on an object, we combine them to find the net force. If the forces are balanced, they cancel out and nothing changes; if they are unbalanced, the object accelerates!
A toy cart is pulled to the right with a force of 12 Newtons, while friction pulls it to the left with a force of 4 Newtons. What is the net force acting on the cart, and which way will it move?
- Identify the forces and their directions: we have 12 N pointing Right, and 4 N pointing Left.
- Since the forces are in opposite directions, subtract the smaller force from the larger force to find the net force: 12 N - 4 N = 8 N.
- Determine the direction of the net force, which always matches the direction of the larger force (Right).
- State the final result: The net force is 8 Newtons to the right, causing the cart to speed up to the right.
