Welcome! Today we will explore how your body gets its unique traits, like your eye color or height, using a special set of instructions.

Inside almost every cell of your body, you have a set of instructions called DNA. This DNA is tightly wound up into structures called chromosomes, which act like instruction manuals.

A gene is a small section of a chromosome that holds the recipe for a specific trait. For example, one gene might determine your hair texture, while another determines how tall you will grow.

These genes are passed down from parents to their offspring during reproduction. Because you get half of your chromosomes from each parent, you inherit a unique mix of their traits.

  1. Identify the location of the instruction: The instruction for flower color is stored inside a gene, which is a segment of DNA on a chromosome.
  2. Trace the inheritance: The parent plant passes a copy of this chromosome to the offspring plant during reproduction.
  3. Read the instruction: The offspring plant's cells read the specific gene sequence for 'bright red flowers'.
  4. Express the trait: The cells use this gene to build red pigments, resulting in the physical trait of bright red flowers on the new plant.
