Every object around us is either sitting still or moving. Newton's First Law of Motion states that an object's motion will not change unless a push or pull acts on it. This tendency of an object to resist changes in its motion is called inertia.

Balanced forces are equal in size and opposite in direction. When forces are balanced, they cancel each other out completely. This means a resting object stays totally still, and a moving object keeps moving at the exact same speed and direction.
Unbalanced forces happen when one force is stronger than the other. This creates a leftover force, called a net force, which changes the object's motion. The object will speed up, slow down, or change its direction in the direction of that stronger force.
A heavy soccer ball sits on the grass. A player kicks it with a force of 15 Newtons to the right, while the grass pushes back with a friction force of 3 Newtons to the left. Analyze the forces to determine if they are balanced or unbalanced, and explain how the ball's motion will change.
- Identify the forces acting on the ball: we have 15 Newtons pointing to the right (the kick) and 3 Newtons pointing to the left (friction).
- Compare the strengths of these two opposing forces to see if they are equal.
- Since 15 Newtons is much larger than 3 Newtons, the forces are unequal and therefore unbalanced.
- Calculate the leftover net force by subtracting the smaller force from the larger force: 15 Newtons minus 3 Newtons equals 12 Newtons to the right.
- Apply Newton's First Law: because the forces are unbalanced, the ball cannot stay still. It must accelerate and roll to the right.
