In physics, energy is the ability to do work. Whenever you run, kick a soccer ball, or turn on a lightbulb, energy is being used or transformed from one type to another.

Work happens when we apply a force (like a push or a pull) to an object, and that object moves in the direction of our push. If the object doesn't move, no work has been done!

We measure both work and energy in a unit called Joules (J). Think of Joules as 'energy points'—every time you do work, you spend some of your energy points to move something else!

✏️ Worked example

Sam pushes a heavy box with a force of 10 Newtons. The box slides 5 meters across the floor in the same direction. How much work did Sam do on the box?

  1. Identify the formula for work: Work = Force × Distance (W = F × d).
  2. Plug in the values given in the problem: Force (F) = 10 Newtons, and Distance (d) = 5 meters.
  3. Multiply the numbers together: 10 N × 5 m = 50.
  4. Add the correct unit of measurement: Work is measured in Joules (J), so the final answer is 50 Joules (50 J).
