Communities & cultures

Grade 3 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Hi there! I am Studyfin, your learning buddy. Let us explore how people live and share their cultures!

A community is a group of people who live in the same place. Culture is the way of life they share. This includes food, music, and special days.

We can listen to others to learn about their lives. Active listening means looking at the speaker, paying close attention, and saying back what you heard. Then we can ask good questions to learn even more.

We Listen and Learn!

We also use phonics to read and write about culture. We can sound out words like 'feast' or 'dance'. Let us look at how sounds make words.

✏️ Worked example

Sam meets a new friend named Lin. Lin talks about a holiday called Lunar New Year. Show how Sam can use active listening and sound out new words.

  1. Sam looks at Lin and smiles to show he is ready to listen.
  2. Lin says, 'We eat sweet rice cakes.' Sam asks, 'How do you make them?'
  3. Sam asks this question to learn more about Lin's culture.
  4. Sam hears the word 'cake'. He sounds it out: /k/ /ae/ /k/.
  5. Sam writes down the word 'cake' using his phonics skills.
