Before you read a book, you must choose a goal. This is called setting a purpose. It helps you focus your mind.
A good is a real thing you can touch. A toy, an apple, and a book are goods. People buy them and take them home.
A service is work that someone does for you. A haircut, a bus ride, and teaching are services. No new object is made for you to keep.
✏️ Worked example
Imagine you are reading a story about a busy town. Your goal is to find all the jobs that make goods. How do you set your purpose and find the answer?
- First, state your purpose: 'I am reading to find jobs that make physical things.'
- Next, read the text carefully. Look for workers who create objects you can touch.
- Identify the baker. The baker makes bread. Bread is a good you can eat. This matches your purpose!
- Identify the doctor. The doctor heals sick people. This is a helpful action, not a physical object, so it is a service. Skip this one.
- Write down your final list of goods-producing jobs based on your goal.
