Let us look at a map. We can count the steps or miles between places. To plan a trip, we can add the distances together.
Sometimes we do not need an exact number. We can round distances to the nearest 10 or 100 to make adding fast and easy.
✏️ Worked example
A map shows that the park is 37 miles away. The lake is 42 miles past the park. First, estimate the total distance by rounding each number to the nearest 10. Then, find the exact total distance.
Step 1: Look at the first distance. The park is 37 miles away. The number 7 is in the ones place, so we round up. 37 rounds to 40.
Step 2: Look at the second distance. The lake is 42 miles. The number 2 is in the ones place, so we round down. 42 rounds to 40.
Step 3: Add the rounded numbers to estimate. 40 + 40 = 80 miles. Our estimate is 80 miles.
Step 4: Now find the exact total. Add the real numbers together: 37 + 42.
Step 5: Add the ones: 7 + 2 = 9. Add the tens: 30 + 40 = 70. The exact distance is 79 miles. 79 is very close to our estimate of 80!
