Money helps us buy things. We use paper bills and metal coins. Each coin has its own value.
We can add coins together. A dime is worth 10 cents. A nickel is worth 5 cents. Together, they make 15 cents.
We can subtract to find change. If you pay 20 cents for a 15 cent toy, you get 5 cents back.
We can use multiplication for groups of money. If you have 3 dimes, you have 3 groups of 10 cents. That is 30 cents in total.
✏️ Worked example
Sam has 4 nickels. He buys a sticker for 12 cents. How much money does Sam have left?
- First, find how much money Sam has. A nickel is worth 5 cents.
- Multiply 4 nickels by 5 cents. 4 times 5 is 20 cents.
- Next, subtract the cost of the sticker. The sticker costs 12 cents.
- Subtract 12 from 20. 20 minus 12 is 8.
- Sam has 8 cents left!
