Hi there! Today we will learn how to write a great draft about US holidays.

When we write, we start with a draft. A draft is our first try at writing. We want to keep our writing focused on one main idea.

Let us choose Thanksgiving as our topic. To keep it focused, we will write about how we share food. Sharing food is a key US tradition.

Now we build our draft. We add details that match our focus. We must leave out details that do not fit, like playing video games.

1. We eat turkey with family. 2. I played a video game. 3. We share sweet pumpkin pie.
✏️ Worked example

Let us write a draft about Independence Day on July 4th. Our focus is the colorful fireworks. How do we build this draft step by step?

  1. We choose our main focus: watching fireworks on July 4th.
  2. We write our first sentence: 'On July Fourth, we watch bright fireworks.'
  3. We add a supporting detail: 'They make loud booms in the dark sky.'
  4. We check our next idea: 'I like to eat cold ice cream.' This does not fit our focus on fireworks, so we leave it out.
  5. We write a final focused sentence: 'The pretty colors light up the night.'
