Communities & cultures

Grade 4 · Social Studies · Free lesson

Hi! I am Studyfin. Let us explore how people live, talk, and share together in communities!

A community is a group of people who live in the same place. They share rules, help each other, and celebrate together.

Culture is the way of life of a group. It includes their food, music, and holidays. We can learn about culture by asking polite questions.

Culture

We also use phonics to read and write about our world. For example, the word 'chat' starts with the 'ch' sound. We use this sound to talk to friends.

✏️ Worked example

Let us learn how to ask a good question about someone's culture. Imagine your friend brings a new food to lunch.

  1. Look at the food with a friendly smile.
  2. Think about what you want to know. You might want to know its name or how it tastes.
  3. Ask a polite question. You can say: 'That looks neat! What is the name of that food?'
  4. Listen actively to their answer. Do not interrupt them.
  5. Say thank you for sharing. Now you have learned something new!
