Hi there! Let's explore how to read maps and estimate distances together!
Maps help us find our way. We use a compass rose to see directions like North, South, East, and West.
We can estimate distances on a map using compatible numbers. This means we use friendly numbers that are easy to add in our heads.
To solve map problems quickly, we can round numbers to the nearest 10 or 100. This helps us make a smart guess before we do the exact math.
✏️ Worked example
A hiker walks 32 miles North on Day 1. Then she walks 47 miles East on Day 2. Estimate the total miles she walked by rounding to the nearest ten. Then find the exact total.
- First, look at the first distance: 32 miles. Round 32 to the nearest ten. Since 2 is less than 5, we round down to 30.
- Next, look at the second distance: 47 miles. Round 47 to the nearest ten. Since 7 is 5 or more, we round up to 50.
- Now, add the rounded numbers to estimate the total. 30 + 50 = 80 miles.
- Finally, add the exact numbers to find the actual distance. 32 + 47 = 79 miles. Our estimate of 80 is very close!
