Hi there! Today we will learn about the leaders of our country, the US presidents.
The president leads the executive branch of the United States government. The president signs bills into law, meets with leaders of other countries, and commands the armed forces, all from the White House.
George Washington became the first president in 1789, soon after the American Revolution. He set traditions other presidents followed, such as stepping down after two terms in office.
Americans hold a presidential election every four years. Citizens vote in their own states, and those votes decide the electoral votes that pick the winner. No president may serve more than two terms.

Let us compare a past leader and a present leader. How can we tell them apart?
Look at the dates. George Washington was president from 1789 to 1797. This is in the past.
Look at who is president right now. This person is our present leader.
Compare their duties. Both past and present presidents lead the executive branch, serve as commander in chief, and can sign or veto bills passed by Congress.
