The United States is a huge country. To make it easier to study, we divide the fifty states into five main regions based on their location and land.
Before we read about a new place, we must establish a purpose for reading. This means we ask ourselves why we are reading, like finding out how people live in the cold Northeast.
When we share our opinions about a region, we must speak clearly. We look people in the eye and use facts to back up our thoughts.
✏️ Worked example
Show how to set a reading purpose, read about the Southwest region, and express an opinion about living there using facts.
- Step 1: Set your purpose. You want to learn how the hot, dry climate of the Southwest affects daily life.
- Step 2: Read the facts. The Southwest has deserts, gets very little rain, and has hot summers. People use air conditioning and save water.
- Step 3: Form your opinion. Decide if you would like to live there. For example: 'I would like to live in the Southwest.'
- Step 4: Find your supporting facts. The warm weather means you can play outside all year, and the desert has beautiful giant cacti.
- Step 5: Practice speaking. Stand tall, look at your partner's eyes, and say: 'I want to live in the Southwest because I love warm weather and want to see giant cacti!'
