Long ago, the United States was much smaller. Most people lived near the East Coast. Soon, families wanted to move west to find new land, build homes, and start farms.
Families traveled in big wooden wagons pulled by horses or oxen. These were called covered wagons. They moved very slowly across flat grasslands and high mountains.
The place where people were just starting to settle was called the frontier. As more people moved, the frontier line kept shifting further west toward the Pacific Ocean.
Imagine you are a kid named Sam moving west in 1850. How would you pack your wagon to make sure your family survives the long trip?
- First, you must choose food that will not spoil. You pack dry flour, salt pork, and beans.
- Next, you pack tools like an axe and seeds so you can build a cabin and plant crops when you arrive.
- Then, you leave heavy toys and fancy furniture behind because the wagon cannot be too heavy for the oxen to pull.
- Finally, you pack warm blankets and water barrels to stay safe during hot days and freezing nights.
